Girls Build SFiAM
Why We Choose Civic Engagement and Leadership
What are the kinds of barriers to success that your school is facing? |
What kind of issues could your school rally around addressing? |
Civic Engagement and Leadership is important to SFiAM because we live in a low-income, mainly Hispanic community where resources and opportunities are limited. Our community is special because it is a small niche within the large San Fernando Valley. The community of San Fernando has so much potential, it just needs the opportunity to harness it. Who better to reach out to community members and increase civic engagement than the children that live in this community! We chose civic engagement and leadership because the only people that can truly change things are those who live in the community and those who are invested, that is what our team of girls are. By focusing on this challenge area girls are not only shaping the present opportunities of our community but also their future. Our community does not have a voice, if SFiAM girls are chosen to participate in Girls Build LA and focus on civic engagement and leadership, we are committed to making the voice of our community and student’s heard.

SFiAM's mission is to create opportunity and change. We are a small pilot school who took on the challenge of being different and we are seeing amazing results. Girls Build LA is the perfect catalyst for our girls to make an impact on our community while being role models to the other students at our school. SFiAM is committed to providing students with the real world skills that will prepare them for their future; what better opportunity than improving our community! Being a small school means that this small group of 10 girls will be demonstrating their ability to the whole school. All of SFiAM will see what girls are capable of and what students can accomplish when given the opportunity. If we are chosen, Girls Build LA will not impact the lives of 10 girls but the lives of 440 students.
